A solo exhibition by Tanya Baker
Disappear Here (2011) attempts to document the existential idea of our apparent freedom through choice in the face of time; our culmination of choices and our memory of these which help to define us in the temporal place we are today and how this provides meaning through identity. The images strive to excavate a past within the present, and together with our imagined view of who we are, define our place in the world.
With one of photography’s main functions being to provide a means to remember, within the series Disappear Here imagined memories are created, places that could belong to anyone. Together the images create a feeling of emptiness
and isolation, from the past and from the world around us. These fictitious memories of childhood are an illusion of meaning and constructed memory for the viewer.
