More about the classes

Jewellery and silversmithing classes

An exciting range of classes on offer at Gaffa will give individuals the opportunity to learn the foundations of contemporary jewellery making.

The foundation classes are suited for students with no previous skills and will provide hands on experience with saw piercing, filing, soldering and polishing to create and design their own silver jewellery.

An intermediate course is available for those with previous knowledge and experience with jewellery making.

Students will work at their own pace and be exposed to specialised techniques including stone setting, metal inlay, roller printing, wax carving and much more.

Each continuing student will have the unique opportunity to showcase their work at Gaffa Gallery at the end of the year as part of a group exhibition.

Gaffa is fitted with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities housed in a spacious workshop environment. It is home to over 15 resident jewellery artists and designers and students will have the rare chance to work alongside practitioners in a lively hub of creativity. All tools and equipment are provided as well as most silver material.

Photography classes/workshop

This is a course for anyone who loves photography, taking pictures and just having fun with cameras and images. It's a photography-for-everyone approach – a hobby/interest/fun course, including theoretical discussion of images.

To enjoy the course, you do not require 'a good camera' (an SLR). You can even apply these insights using a mobile phone camera! Students will gain an understanding of elements to consider when making images, as well as what other photographers may have been thinking during their image-making.

There are some very simple visual effects that really improve the results we can get when we get behind the camera. We'll be looking at the elements of design, such as line, tone, colour and texture. When we realise how to approach our subjects with these ideas in our minds, we can achieve stunning images so easily!

The content will be a mixture of looking at images and image appreciation, thinking about design concepts when approaching your own image-making and introductory/basic technical information.

There will be no compulsory homework, but you will receive notes. You can bring in photos you've taken if you'd like to discuss them. Additionally, if you want to shoot during the course and show what insights you've applied, that will be welcomed too.

We hope you'll come and join in the fun!
