SAY HELLO TO GAFFA'S NEW RETAIL STORE: JEWELLERY & HANDMADE WARES BY AUSTRALIA'S HOTTEST DESIGNERS
July 2010
Sydney's largest artist-run space Gaffa this week launches its much-anticipated retail outlet, aptly-named 'Sterling by Gaffa'. From 2pm on Saturday 17 July, lovers of contemporary jewellery and objects d'art are invited to attend the official opening of 'Sterling by Gaffa' in Sydney's CBD.
The new store sits within the original enquires room of the expansive heritage-listed former Clarence St Police Station (c.1891) that Gaffa now calls home. Modern wearable and collectable items for sale include original designs from some of this country's most promising emerging jewellery makers, as well as showcasing, glass and ceramics from well-known Australian artists and designers such as Andrew Simpson, Melinda Young, and Mark Vaarwerk.
Customers can see images of the represented jewellers at work and view scans of concept sketches and early mock-ups that led to the final item for sale.
Director of Gaffa Kelly Robson is keen to point out what makes 'Sterling' stand out from other retail stores.
"Gaffa is about supporting artists and makers and educating everyone about contemporary jewellery and objects that are being handmade."
"We want customers to understand the stories and creative process behind their purchase. Sterling not only presents the final product, but also promotes a 'behind the scenes' look at the processes involved in their chosen hand-crafted treasure," said Kelly.
Prices of jewellery and other collectable objects range between $25 and $1000.
