“Abstraction replaces the traditional narrative or commemorative function of the embroidered badge typology. These badges are then repeated to such an extent that their individuality recedes, and new compositions emerge.”

INFORMATION

Constructed from limited edition embroidered badges, this body of work examines the potential of the multiple and the visual dialogue between surface pattern and a 3d expression of that pattern.

Despite the standardisation, and apparent identical visual aesthetics of the original design, each badge is unique as an outcome of the inevitable thread quirks within the machine-made output.

Abstraction replaces the traditional narrative or commemorative function of the embroidered badge typology. These badges are then repeated to such an extent that their individuality recedes, and new compositions emerge. The playful, open-ended visual exchange between each badge, and between surface and form, now constitutes the dominant experience.
