Sterling

Sterling is a recently launched dedicated contemporary jewellery and object retail store, situated in the heart of Sydney's CBD. We are located on the ground floor of the gaffa gallery creative precinct in the original ‘enquires room’ of the heritage-listed c.1891 Clarence St Police Station. Sterling profiles some of Australia’s most promising emerging makers, as well as showcasing, jewellery, glass and ceramics from talented Australian and New Zealand artists and designers.

Sterling not only presents the final product, but also promotes a ‘behind the scenes’ look at the processes involved in the handcrafted object. Screening images of makers at work, scans of concept sketches and early mock-ups, it allows the customer to garner a further education into the ever-growing popularity of the contemporary jewellery and object market.

We invite you into the wonderful world that is contemporary design, and endeavor to inspire you with the skillfully crafted hand-made wares we present.

Featured designer: Erin Timony

Erin Timony Bespoke Fine Jeweller
Erin began studies at College of Fine Arts (UNSW) in painting but soon discovered jewellery making and the desire to turn her creative eye to more tangible, three dimensional pieces.
During her final year of jewellery making at COFA, Erin commenced the Jewellery Trade Manufacture course at Enmore Design centre to further her skills base. She also studied at the Gemmological Association of Australia to expand her knowledge of diamonds and precious gems.
Next she completed an apprenticeship under the mentorship of a master goldsmith/designer, who imparted his traditional gold smithing techniques to her.
Erin has found further inspiration in the wealth of natural gemstones available and added their colours to her pallet. One of her favourite parts of her job is finding the perfect stone, to meet the requirements of her customer, be it a diamond or a beautifully coloured gem.

THE 4TH WALL

Launching Gaffa's new dedicated screening room on the ground level

THE 4TH WALL refers to the convention in modern theatre of an imagined "wall" between the action occurring within the world of a cinematic or theatrical work, and its audience. Formerly prison cells, Gaffa's three-walled arcade spaces have long-since been re-purposed in the service of art and design; iron bars replaced by glass windows. As an extension of the gallery level, and to run as complimentary to our gallery program, Gaffa will be dedicating Arcade 4 on the ground level to the exhibition of Video art works and documentaries.

Exhibition #5

BLACKBOX | JASON SIMS

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/15930/171177/6. Absence Consuming detail.1000_905.jpg" border="0" width="905" height="603" width_o="1000" height_o="667" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/15930/171177/6. Absence Consuming detail.1000_o.jpg" align="left" data-mid="10292843" />

Jason Sims’ work is difficult to categorize. It’s not quite flat art, although most of his pieces hang on the wall. It’s not quite glass art, although glass is arguably his principal material. And, it’s not quite installation art, although his work does transform the perception of space.

It is also rather ambiguous when represented in print. The magic doesn’t translate and his pieces look somewhat two-dimensional, even computer generated. In fact, images do them no justice at all; they necessitate actualization. To date, Sims’ oeuvre comprises three-dimensional glass
light boxes that reflect a real space upon itself creating the illusion of a never-ending tunnel. By manipulating the angle of the mirrors inside the box, Sims sends this tunnel off in various directions, round the corner or down into the abyss. Some of his works also include blown glass elements,
seemingly suspended in space, which disappear into the distance.

BlackBox presents new work in Sims’ ever expanding series of light boxes and also sees Within or Without back on display. Aptly named, the exhibition not only presents a series of black boxes in the physical sense but the works are also reminiscent of ‘black box’ devices - entities whose inners workings are unknown. Moreover, the title invites interesting
parallels between black box theory - the idea that a black box cannot be opened up and examined but rather can only be understood based on an analysis of inputs and outputs - and existentialism.

Although still only emerging, Sims has had considerable success in the first few years of his career. Within or Without won the 2007 Helpmann Academy Graduate Show People’s Choice Award. Sims’ work was exhibited in the group show SafARI, an unofficial fringe event to the Sydney Biennial
of Contemporary Art, 2010, held at Firstdraft. Last year ArtBank acquired three of his pieces for their collection, he was a finalist in the 2011 Tom Malone Prize, and his third solo show opened at A.P. Bond Aboriginal and Contemporary Art gallery in Adelaide in early September.

Exhibition continues till 30th October 2011

Exhibition #4

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/15930/171177/box_one.1000_905.jpg" border="0" width="905" height="547" width_o="1000" height_o="605" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/15930/171177/box_one.1000_o.jpg" align="left" data-mid="9266595" />

FOLDS | SEAN O'CONNELL

The exhibition Folds features two videos which are early documentation from O'Connell's ongoing collision experiments. These experiments are undertaken in the artist's Bundeena studio using an elaborate set-up built
by the artist himself. Two hollow metal boxes are launched into motion aimed towards each other whilst O'Connell records these intimate moments of interaction in moving images and sound recordings.

"For a few years I have been obsessed with colliding boxes. I love the way they interact, the way their inner structures are revealed through folds of crumpling metal at the moment of impact."

The exhibition Folds is the resultant documentation of work developed over several years and select public presentations at various stages of the process. Crash was initially shown at Wollongong Regional Art Gallery
through Vivian Vidulich, and Collide was first presented as part of Imagining Interiors, initiated and produced by Craft South, curated by Wendy Walker and presented at the Jam Factory.

:::ABOUT THE ROCKS POP UP PROJECT:::

Four buildings//six months//limitless thinking

For six short months The Rocks will pulse with the energy and passion of an ever-changing mix of creative minds as they take up residence in four vacant heritage buildings on George Street.

Artists, sculptors, fashion designers, jewellery makers, writers, and even a tailor will turn The Rocks into a nucleus of studios, galleries, pop-up shops and event spaces as they breathe new life into familiar surrounds.

How each artist or collective uses their space is limited only by their own imagination. The only thing you can be sure of is that nothing stays the same for long and you're always in for a surprise.

Check therocks.com to find out what's happening each week.10am to 7pm Wednesdays to Sundays

ELLA A DONNE | Barbara Doran

This exhibition will be formally opened by Lindy Lee

Barbara Doran works as an artist, art director and university lecturer. She was born in Wagga Wagga, Australia and grew up in Southern African countries Swaziland and Zimbabwe. Known for a diverse mix of skills, studies and experiences, her artwork similarly employs inter-disciplinary mediums including costume, film, photography, installations and food. Her
artwork revolves around questions of personal, collective and environmental health. Doran probes these questions by exploring ideology and the way macro and micro relationships intersect with physical
and symbolic systems. Her work has been exhibited in several solo and group shows since 2003. In 2009 and 2010 she was the national winner
of the “She” award. She has also been a finalist in other national competitions including the Olive Cotton Award and Sunrise film competition.

GAFFA STOCKROOM | ALICE ROSE + PHOEBE MILLER

Featuring three of Sterling by gaffa's favourite artists in the Pop UP
Stock-Room!

Ceramicist, Alice Rose, whose Mirage vases explore the relationship between perspective and perception, depicting a two dimensional image in three dimensional form.

Contemporary jeweller Phoebe Miller sews theatrical neck pieces using recycled and remnant fabrics. Each one unique in colour and texture.

Shan Shan Mok, a contemporary jeweller and object maker, who will be showcasing her amazing silicon bowls. Her inspiration focuses on the form,
movement and the life cycle of coral, this seems appropriate as the word 'Shan' means coral in Chinese.

All works will be for sale and will be available to take away once purchased.

Exhibition #2
BIG DEAL

A solo exhibition by TIM ANDREW

Opening Friday 17th June 2011

Exhibition #1
SEMI AUTOMATIC

SEMI AUTOMATIC Gaffa’s inaugural exhibition in the pop-up program is comprised of a selection of works from the original, larger-scale exhibition Reflex: A show of mechanical poetry, shown at Gaffa in 2010 featuring eleven artists.

On view from 13 May until 12 June 2011, this interactive exhibition consists of kinetic sculptures displayed in an absurd, delightful and slightly sinister manner.A quirky mix of Jules Verne-meets-Myth Busters, Semi Automatic is an exhibitionthat actively explores both modern science and and mechanical poetry.

All the objects on view require the active participation of gallery visitors to make the exhibition come to life. The magic of these machines are in the reactions waiting to happen, to be set in motion by the touch of the hand, the breath or the movement of the body. In essence, each machine is ready to have a witty, sublime or even wicked conversation with its audience.
Semi Automatic is an opportunity to engage with the poetic possibilities of machines and their hand cranked, 12-volt, gravity-activated personalities.

Some machines spin at the turn of a handle or the flick of a switch, revealing their nature with a cacophony of sound and movement. Others will rise and fall gently only to rise once more while others will crash, springing back to life at the flick of a switch. Farquahr-Still explains: “To look with the eyes is one thing, to feel with the hands, another thing entirely. Objects have form, color and scale but they also have weight, resistance and sound. The point of the exhibition is to bring together artists to create machines which serve no purpose other than to bend the mind into new shapes and to walk away filled with wonder at their brilliance.”

OUTSIDE IN
Clare Weeks

The exhibition OUTSIDE IN observes the relationship between nature and the domestic through the passing of life and time. In the tradition of observing and preserving nature (photographically), this series records the subject and places it into the domestic landscape. The images explore the relationship between subject and object, reflecting on what they each symbolize and how they can, if at all, co-exist. Visually this can be read as a portrayal of man’s impact on nature and the desire to bring the natural world into the domestic environment.

Biography

Clare Weeks has a BFA (Honours) from the University of Newcastle and has been a teacher in Photomedia at the Newcastle Art School Hunter Institute of Technology since 2008. CONVERSATIONS WITH THE LAND
Christian Pearson

I'm fascinated by the way the Australian landscape influences my behaviour when alone. I find myself having a conversation, whispering out loud to the sky, the trees, the water and rocks. My mind is allowed to riff, inextricably linked to my emotions that the landscape conjures. I lose myself in the land and for a brief moment become part of it and feel the richness of time it has experienced.

My photographic work represents this space I briefly inhabit and the ponderings and musings evoked. The created images are a meditation on the ancient Australian landscape unbounded by a recognition of place.

Biography

Christian Pearson is an early to mid career photographic artist and commercial photographer based in Melbourne, Australia.
Christian has mounted 11 solo exhibitions in Australia and the UK. In 1999 Christian was selected to exhibit at the Australian Centre of Photography for the new Australian photo artist of the year award for the series ‘Reflections in Michelle’s eyes’.
In 2000, Christian founded his successful photography business Misheye. This work takes him across Australia shooting from the air, underwater and underground to capture images of the land, its animals and infrastructure. His clients include Melbourne Water, Parks Victoria, Department of Sustainability and Environment and Vic Roads.
From 2002 – 2006 Christian exhibited ‘Sometimes…’ at Axiom gallery and ‘Ephemeral nature’ at Intrude Contemporary art. Christian also held solo shows at Charles Smith Gallery and at London’s IMAX theatre featuring his wildlife photography shot during extensive stays in Africa and in the jungles of India photographing wild tigers.
Christian’s recent work has centred on how to interpret the Australian landscape using photography as a gatherer of information for the senses. He was awarded an artist grant from the City of Moonee Valley in 2008 to create ‘The secret river’ an exhibition of images at the Incinerator arts complex in Melbourne.
His latest work ‘Conversations with the land’ was shown during the Ballarat International Foto Biennale and will be shown at Gaffa gallery Sydney, as part of the Head On photo festival.

THE ALIEN IN OUR MIDST...
Belinda Allen and Chris Lawrie

The alien in our midst … is an exhibition of photographic montages and assemblages exploring notions of displacement, land and belonging. Images of outback and rural Australia are juxtaposed with portraits of recently arrived immigrant youth, ghosts of Afghan pioneers, texts relating to early settlement, and vintage book pages. Most of the landscape images are from a trip from Menindee Lakes to Flinders Ranges and Lake Eyre in 2011.
Lawrie's mixed media work explores the experiences of immigrants, from early sea voyages to recent refugee arrivals, including his own family who immigrated in 1839. His images in this exhibition challenge our preconceptions about people and place by juxtaposing the often visually exotic appearance of young migrants and refugees with the new and, to them, exotic environment in which they now live.
Belinda Allen is a digital photomedia artist concerned with human relationship to land and environment. Her manipulated landscapes explore the gap between inhabiting and becoming one with environment. White Australians may refer to new settlers as 'alien', but, evidenced by the treatment of environment as commodity, are in many ways still aliens in their own land.
