<description>You are here: home → gaffa shopOnline ShopApply for RepesentationFeaturing our newest project space: The Curio

The Curio is a collector's cabinet dedicated to featuring one designer/maker for a period of two weeks. Housed in two of Sterling by Gaffa's retail cabinets, The Curio aims to showcase not only an artists production range, but to give the audience an extensive inside look into the makers practice. On display will be a sample of exhibition work, the maker's production range as well as images/text about their practice. The dates and launch party for The Curio coincide with the Exhibitions on the above Gallery Level.

Curated by Amy Robson &#38; Nina Baker

Featured Artist: Natalia Milosz-Piekarska

Natalia Milosz-Piekarska's work engages with the animist notion that inanimate objects can be imbued with a spirit, as she explores ideas of totemism, fetishism and the 'spirit' within objects. Her contemporary jewellery practice revolves around creating whimsical artefacts from stories and mythologies untold. Steeped in fictitious folklore and superstition, these objects do not reference any particular form of belief, but rather the structure of belief itself.
Natalia’s retail collection is an offshoot from her research based work into talismanic jewellery and objects. In her small, curious little charms, Natalia imbues a little mystery and whimsy, to be coveted and treasured.

THE DEATH OF HERMINE

Solo exhibition by Julia Burns

A woman made of fleshy soap looks longingly towards a covered window.

A leak in the ceiling drips water where she sits.

The woman is inside herself; unable to move from her chair.

As the warm water from above drips down onto her face, she slowly disappears.

Biography

Julia Burns is an artist interested in the psychology of contemporary society. Issues of paralysis, status anxiety, competition and a general loss of grounding are of her prime concern. As part of her artistic practice, she listens to the emotions of people around her, and tries to understand some of the information and confusion carried around by each of them. Through empathy and summary, she hopes to materialise a sense of recognition for her viewers and a feeling that they have been heard. This new series of sculptures made in soap features emotional characters that are affected by natural elements over time.

In 2011 Julia Burns exhibited her work at the Jakarta Biennale and with the Experimenta/Asialink Touring Exhibition 'Selectively Revealed'. In 2010 she won the Freedman Foundation Traveling Scholarship and did a four month residency at Videotage, Hong Kong. She has shown at the Australia Council for the Arts, Osage Gallery Hong Kong, Firstdraft Gallery and beta_space. In 2009 she won the Marrickville Culture and Arts Grant. She was included in the d/Lux/Media/Arts Regional Touring program in 2010 and 2011. Her work has shown at the Western Plains Cultural Centre in Dubbo, NSW and Griffith Regional Gallery with d/Lux/Media/Arts.

THE 4TH WALL

Launching Gaffa's new dedicated screening room on the ground level

THE 4TH WALL refers to the convention in modern theatre of an imagined "wall" between the action occurring within the world of a cinematic or theatrical work, and its audience. Formerly prison cells, Gaffa's three-walled arcade spaces have long-since been re-purposed in the service of art and design; iron bars replaced by glass windows. As an extension of the gallery level, and to run as complimentary to our gallery program, Gaffa will be dedicating Arcade 4 on the ground level to the exhibition of Video art works and documentaries.

Exhibition #5

BLACKBOX &#124; JASON SIMS

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/15930/171177/6. Absence Consuming detail.1000_905.jpg" border="0" width="905" height="603" width_o="1000" height_o="667" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/15930/171177/6. Absence Consuming detail.1000_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

Jason Sims’ work is difficult to categorize. It’s not quite flat art, although most of his pieces hang on the wall. It’s not quite glass art, although glass is arguably his principal material. And, it’s not quite installation art, although his work does transform the perception of space.

It is also rather ambiguous when represented in print. The magic doesn’t translate and his pieces look somewhat two-dimensional, even computer generated. In fact, images do them no justice at all; they necessitate actualization. To date, Sims’ oeuvre comprises three-dimensional glass
light boxes that reflect a real space upon itself creating the illusion of a never-ending tunnel. By manipulating the angle of the mirrors inside the box, Sims sends this tunnel off in various directions, round the corner or down into the abyss. Some of his works also include blown glass elements,
seemingly suspended in space, which disappear into the distance.

BlackBox presents new work in Sims’ ever expanding series of light boxes and also sees Within or Without back on display. Aptly named, the exhibition not only presents a series of black boxes in the physical sense but the works are also reminiscent of ‘black box’ devices - entities whose inners workings are unknown. Moreover, the title invites interesting
parallels between black box theory - the idea that a black box cannot be opened up and examined but rather can only be understood based on an analysis of inputs and outputs - and existentialism.

Although still only emerging, Sims has had considerable success in the first few years of his career. Within or Without won the 2007 Helpmann Academy Graduate Show People’s Choice Award. Sims’ work was exhibited in the group show SafARI, an unofficial fringe event to the Sydney Biennial
of Contemporary Art, 2010, held at Firstdraft. Last year ArtBank acquired three of his pieces for their collection, he was a finalist in the 2011 Tom Malone Prize, and his third solo show opened at A.P. Bond Aboriginal and Contemporary Art gallery in Adelaide in early September.

Exhibition continues till 30th October 2011

Exhibition #4

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/15930/171177/box_one.1000_905.jpg" border="0" width="905" height="547" width_o="1000" height_o="605" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/15930/171177/box_one.1000_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

FOLDS &#124; SEAN O'CONNELL

The exhibition Folds features two videos which are early documentation from O'Connell's ongoing collision experiments. These experiments are undertaken in the artist's Bundeena studio using an elaborate set-up built
by the artist himself. Two hollow metal boxes are launched into motion aimed towards each other whilst O'Connell records these intimate moments of interaction in moving images and sound recordings.

"For a few years I have been obsessed with colliding boxes. I love the way they interact, the way their inner structures are revealed through folds of crumpling metal at the moment of impact."

The exhibition Folds is the resultant documentation of work developed over several years and select public presentations at various stages of the process. Crash was initially shown at Wollongong Regional Art Gallery
through Vivian Vidulich, and Collide was first presented as part of Imagining Interiors, initiated and produced by Craft South, curated by Wendy Walker and presented at the Jam Factory.

Four buildings//six months//limitless thinking

For six short months The Rocks will pulse with the energy and passion of an ever-changing mix of creative minds as they take up residence in four vacant heritage buildings on George Street.

Artists, sculptors, fashion designers, jewellery makers, writers, and even a tailor will turn The Rocks into a nucleus of studios, galleries, pop-up shops and event spaces as they breathe new life into familiar surrounds.

How each artist or collective uses their space is limited only by their own imagination. The only thing you can be sure of is that nothing stays the same for long and you're always in for a surprise.

ELLA A DONNE &#124; Barbara Doran

This exhibition will be formally opened by Lindy Lee

Barbara Doran works as an artist, art director and university lecturer. She was born in Wagga Wagga, Australia and grew up in Southern African countries Swaziland and Zimbabwe. Known for a diverse mix of skills, studies and experiences, her artwork similarly employs inter-disciplinary mediums including costume, film, photography, installations and food. Her
artwork revolves around questions of personal, collective and environmental health. Doran probes these questions by exploring ideology and the way macro and micro relationships intersect with physical
and symbolic systems. Her work has been exhibited in several solo and group shows since 2003. In 2009 and 2010 she was the national winner
of the “She” award. She has also been a finalist in other national competitions including the Olive Cotton Award and Sunrise film competition.

Contemporary jeweller Phoebe Miller sews theatrical neck pieces using recycled and remnant fabrics. Each one unique in colour and texture.

Shan Shan Mok, a contemporary jeweller and object maker, who will be showcasing her amazing silicon bowls. Her inspiration focuses on the form,

Exhibition #2
BIG DEAL

A solo exhibition by TIM ANDREW

Opening Friday 17th June 2011

Exhibition #1
SEMI AUTOMATIC

SEMI AUTOMATIC Gaffa’s inaugural exhibition in the pop-up program is comprised of a selection of works from the original, larger-scale exhibition Reflex: A show of mechanical poetry, shown at Gaffa in 2010 featuring eleven artists.

On view from 13 May until 12 June 2011, this interactive exhibition consists of kinetic sculptures displayed in an absurd, delightful and slightly sinister manner.A quirky mix of Jules Verne-meets-Myth Busters, Semi Automatic is an exhibitionthat actively explores both modern science and and mechanical poetry.

All the objects on view require the active participation of gallery visitors to make the exhibition come to life. The magic of these machines are in the reactions waiting to happen, to be set in motion by the touch of the hand, the breath or the movement of the body. In essence, each machine is ready to have a witty, sublime or even wicked conversation with its audience.
Semi Automatic is an opportunity to engage with the poetic possibilities of machines and their hand cranked, 12-volt, gravity-activated personalities.

Some machines spin at the turn of a handle or the flick of a switch, revealing their nature with a cacophony of sound and movement. Others will rise and fall gently only to rise once more while others will crash, springing back to life at the flick of a switch. Farquahr-Still explains: “To look with the eyes is one thing, to feel with the hands, another thing entirely. Objects have form, color and scale but they also have weight, resistance and sound. The point of the exhibition is to bring together artists to create machines which serve no purpose other than to bend the mind into new shapes and to walk away filled with wonder at their brilliance.”

TROUGH X_HIBITION

Senior Curator, National Portrait Gallery

You can tell a lot about a man by how he wears his hanky. A form of communication developed in the 1970s for gay men to signal their intentions, fetishes, desires and identity to potential sexual partners by wearing varied colour handkerchiefs. Investigating, exploring and inspired by the gay subcultures of ‘hanky codes’, TROUGH X is an exhibition of provocative images and multimedia created and produced by John Tsiavis and Nik Dimopoulos.

Dimopoulous created the TROUGH X parties, setting out to put on an event that was totally unique and sexy in what is arguably otherwise a generic “gay party scene”. His vision was to create a challenging experience that combined art and entertainment; hosting each party in a popup venue, surrounding the patrons with installations and projections, subversively naming the party TROUGH X and featuring some of the world’s most progressive DJs; Danny Wang, Mike Simonetti, Nozaki, JD Samson, Peaches and Stereogamous .
To achieve this he teamed up with John to create party artwork. The resulting imagery featured the attending men and each event was specifically colour-themed, spawning the series that comprises the TROUGH X_HIBITION. The vast body of work was born out of an interest in the way in which gay men communicate, and the broader social and sometimes political implications of such. It is the structure of these communicative codes from which these images draw their visual cues.

Dimopoulous and Tsiavis have combined their experiences as art director/graphic designer and photographer/ director to create images that reference film, advertising, typography, and art history.

RETROSPECTIVE: 50 YEARS OF PHOTOGRAPHS

A solo exhibition by Philip Ramsden

Photography of people and places has always interested me.
50 years ago the world was a much kinder place and photographers were allowed to do as they liked.
Colour is strange, people see it in different ways and it can overwhelm a perfectly good black and white photo.
Photography is an interpretation of whatever you see. Black and white is the ultimate extension of this vision. There is an abstract feel to a black and white picture, a simplification where form and shape take over Details can be lost in shadows concentrating the eye on the subject.
Making contact with people, even if they do not understand me, is a key to my way with a camera. These photos are an attempt to show my view of our world.

While still at school I enrolled in a class at Mosman Evening College to learn to print black and white photographs.
I joined a camera club whose members only made black and white photos. Travelling to the USA and working there for 6 years allowed me to see the country as almost an insider. An alien according to my visa nonetheless. My travels took me all over the USA and Canada on several trips then to Europe and a slow return overland (9 months) to Australia.

My work in several Pathology Labs introduced me to technical photography which I subsequently taught at Sydney TAFE.
Working in the microscope division of Leica took me to a higher level in Scientific Photography and this is a field I still enjoy.
